COMMERCE OF UZICE REGION

The fast industrial development in the Region occurred in the period after the Second World War so that the leading activity in the economy of the Region is industry. The most important industrial branches are: non-ferrous metallurgy, metal industry, construction industry, production of transport means, textile industry, electric power production, wood-processing industry, building materials industry and building operation units, chemical industry, food industry, leather and footwear industry, printing industry, forestry and other industrial branches which employ about 75,000 workers.

There is a great number of companies in the metal industry of the Region where the most important are those working in the fields of non-ferrous metallurgy, metalworking industry and transport means production offering a wide range of metal products (rolled, drawn and compacted products made of copper and aluminium, cast alloys, equipment and installation materials, sintered parts, coolers, heat exchangers, boilers, slide bearings, fittings,chases, various sieves, process industry equipment, hydraulic pumps and cranes, all types of steel and nodular iron castings, metalworking tools, lorries, special vehicles, buses, lorry trailers, seats, various parts, etc.).

Development of electric power industry is based on great water potential of rivers, the capacity of which amounts to 2,695 GWh annually in the Region.

Textile industry of the Region includes the elementary textile production, i.e production of yarn and fabrics, production of ready-to-wear clothes, knitwear garments and industry of carpets and floor coverings. Facilities for production of ready-to-wear clothes dominate the textile industry where the production of underwear and light ready-to-wear clothes take the greatest share in its structure.

The modern wood-processing industry in the region has been developed from old, traditional woodworking handicraft and owing to rich natural resources that are used as raw materials. The main representatives are: producers of furniture, joinery, wood products and packaging, producers of chipboard and veneer, etc.

The most important branches in the agriculture are: live-stock breeding, fruit growing and crop farming. The Region is famous for growing berries, with raspberries dominating, and for the products based on well-developed live-stock breeding, out of which the most famous are smoked beef fillet, smoked pork fillet, hard sausages, bacon, Uzice cream and cheese, etc.

Apart from production branches some other service industries have also been developed in the Region, such as: trade, tourism and catering, traffic and communications, banking, insurance, public utility services, etc.

Owing to its natural preconditions (geographical, climatic, geomorphology), the Region is extremely suitable for development of different kinds of tourism, like: mountain, rural, transit, health-related tourism, organization of congresses, hunting, fishing, sports tourism, etc.

By territorial planning of the Republic of Serbia, the Region is defined as an important tourist area, exceptionally suitable for the production of healthy or ecologically preserved food and water.

Apart from the economic development, the attention is also paid to development of some non-economic activities in the Region, such as medical services, educational system, science, culture, etc.

The Regional Chamber of Commerce is particularly active in improving the business operations quality of enterprises and their stimulating to introduce and certify quality systems.
